Perhaps the most flexible modular synth in Reaktor.

Marx (Click image for bigger view)
Marx

What is Marx? A complete modular system that you can play both via MIDI and by its internal sequencers (or both simultaneously, if desired). It contains three complete multitimbral synths in one instrument, all the components of which can linked in pretty well any way imaginable.

 • Switchless event matrices: 20 routes from 34 poly/mono sources to 120 targets.
 • Switch-based audio routing allows configuration of >37 audio sources and destinations in any desired manner.
 • 5 intermodulating, 32-step pitch+velocity sequencers with loop, one-shot, and cross-trigger modes; buttons for pattern scaling, flipping, shifting, copy/paste, etc.
 • 6 oscillators: 34 oscillator types including waveset and "draw your own;" Audio-rate and event-rate phase, width, FM, and AM modulation for all waveshapes; multiple sync modes.
 • 3 state-variable filters, each with 25 types including dual serial/parallel and comb modes; multiple gain compensation and saturation modes; fully parametric pitch tracking, frequency, Q, FM, mix, saturation, overdrive, frequency split, etc.
 • 6 multimode submixers with audio and event rate modulation.
 • 2 multimode distortion units with a dozen distortion types each.
 • 6 PADGSR envelopes triggered by midi, lfo, or sequencers; hold, predelay, and ADR timing modulation.
 • 3 polyphonic LFOs with multimode sync and polyphonic phase control; amplitude, frequency, and phase modulation.
 • Unique triple waveshaper unit for event and audio modulation.
 • 2 sample & hold units with multiple trigger, gate, and multiplication modes.
 • 3-channel polyphonic mixer with two-channel fx send/return, Lo+hi Eq, and limiter on output.
 • Stereo delay with time-based, tempo, 8-tap, and reverb modes.
 • Chorus with 2X, 4X, 8X, and flanger modes.
 • Polyphonic, monophonic, and legato modes. Voice spread. Unisono with individual pitch+gain control and modulation of each voice. Pitch scale mapping and microtuning; polyphonic tempo glide on three separate channels.
 • Built-in audio recorder.
 • Oscilloscope.
 • Switching automates lowest possible CPU usage. Event downsampling and event envelope logic for even lower CPU usage. Robust, crash-free design.
 • All fits on 1024*768 display!

This is a wonderful synth. Inspires me to want to spend ( a lot!) more time with Reaktor. Afraid the wife will be jealous. Have spent time this evening with both Marx and Arturia's Moog modular emulation. Must admit that Marx has a lot of special modular possibilities that cannot not be bought on a very good commercial product. I do have one question about a possible glitch versus novice misunderstanding on my part. I don't seem to be able to get oscillator 4 to play most built in wave forms. I've tried a number of experiments, only interchanging osc4 with other oscillators in otherwise identical configurations, and I can only get the "noise" waveforms to produce anything in osc 4. AM I overlooking something? (I tired having a look at the actual oscialltor design and could not see obvious glitches. However, like almost everyone else, I am in WAY over my head trying to understand the complete schemtatics of this synth. VERY INSPIRING TO LEARN MORE though.) Looking over the snapshots that come with MArx, I noted little direct use of Osc 4. A definite 10,but I'd appreciate feedback on this questions, as I'm becoming a bit obsessed with it and I hav e got to get some sleep.

Absolutely fantastic. Just trying to figure out what's under the hood would be worth a master's level in Reaktor. Thank you for this incredible machine.

the knobs are to big;) no, serious: where is the prob with comments like that? if someone mean it is to big, to small, to grey to colored...dont hear it, keep cool. the importand think is still-ever the functions into. and there are great.

Thank you for your GREAT efforts, Mr.Meyer. The houres just race by, playing with this beauty. Fabulous !!!

The art of synthesizer design.very good...my only point would be the gui too.bigger knobs and faders would be a benefit.but for all those functions...? that's a mission...:-) Thank you for sharing...!

Ernest Meyer (2006-03-25 19:03:02):
Hi Stefan. Earlier designs had bigger knobs but then users complained the panel did not fit on their screens. Also as an observation, I'm very glad some people like this design. After all it took about 3,000 hours to make this very large synthesizer--that's equivalent to 1.5 years of full-time work in my life which I am sharing for free--and people judge it like it could be built overnight. This time round, out of 200 downloads so far only 3 people bothered to vote. I'm not inclined to be so friendly to Reaktor users any more in the face of those soffowful statistics. Iif you actually *turn* the knobs, you'll find their mouse sensitivity and #steps have been adjusted for a pleasant UI--so even if the knobs are small, they are easy to use. That's what's important when trying to set up a complex isntrument: being able to get to all the controls quickly, and the ocntrols having usable ranges. If you are looking for a simnple instrument with big knobs and fewer controls in the UI, this instrument is **not for you*!!*.

Very flexible indeed.. This is a good synth for exploring SERIOUS sound designing. I think the GUI would benefit from stacked macros though.

Kimmo Kivelä (2006-03-23 17:51:35):
: ) Havent opened the box yet.

Ernest Meyer (2006-03-23 19:31:33):
Hi Jeremiah. I did try using stacked macros but I didn't think it was better. I preferred being able to see all the controls at once, whereas with stacked macros it took alot more clicks to change anything. Also stacked macros took longer to load. So while stacked macros seemed a good idea at first blush, they actually made the synth more difficult to use.

Ernest, this is stunning work. Thanks for doing such a great job and sharing it with everyone.

This could not be a monster, because it neither eats much nor roars terribly. It always be calmly and sounds philosophically, like a gentle-hearted jiant.

Ian Macpherson (2005-05-08 21:56:02):
Ernest - like many of your previous ensembles I love this! But I am getting a message when I load it - F:waveset_all.wav is missing - this comes up six times, then says 6 soundfiles are missing. It still sounds great once it is loaded, but am I missing something?

Wow... it's taken me two years since getting Reaktor 4 to finally write a comment, but after spending the last couple of evenings on Marx 2.0 I have to say something! I think this may be the best synth in Reaktor for me. No disrespect to the makers of other knock out synths like Microwave, 3x, Limelite or Chimerarandom or all of those great Martin Brinkman ensembles, but I like this one best because not only are there so many possibilities, they can be easily achieved with this synth. Because of all the switches for signal routing possibilities you've set up this is the first synth that really does Reaktor as a modular synth well and has a great sound to the oscillators and filters to boot! Awesome!

Just checked out the latest version (Marx2c3) and have a quick note on my snaps included therein: Skip the first 49!! They're all too loud, and it's a rough draft anyway. The repaired version of the set starts with snap 50. I guess the fix got appended rather than overwritten as intended. The idea, btw, was to make a bunch of non-repeating 'scapes based on my fav feature of Marx so far: MIDI-Hold. You can select between them simply using the snap panel, once you've triggered the MIDI-Hold function by playing a few notes into it. Each 'scape can be subtly altered by just playing new notes into it, but you can cycle thru all of 'em without needing to retrigger...obviously I got carried away, which equals success in my dealings w'R4; for my tastes, there's a few in there worth pausing over--go mess 'em up!...thanks again, Ernest!

As Meyer describes in his B-panel docs, Marx makes a magNIFicent sequencer for other synths as well...just paired it with Nanowave for a mind-altering, spell-blinding morning of muscular R4 mayhem ....must muffle these mumblings.... But don't miss Marx as a motor, men!! Masterful!! In anticipation of an update for this upload, I'll keep yakking about it:
Just spent a couple of days making a snap bank for the new Marx and I must say, THIS is R4's flagship synth, imo. It's just got me laughing with delight over music, computers, online communities, NI, the fate of mankind, my little life...thanx, Ernest.

Quite an achievement! It's just a joy to enter into the "world" of this beautiful, and cpu efficient ensemble. I like the various colors which make it easy to navigate the various parameters. Ialmost didn't download because it looks so monterous, but I'm glad I did.

You CAN change to a different snap in the same bank--just select the snap name in the SNAP listbox and ignore the bank list--then it will change directly. However if there are no snaps at all in another bank, instrument structures cannot change to that bank (it is not possible to do so with Reaktor's snapshot module). To make a bank active, you can make sure it exists (using the BANK menu in the snapshot window's toolbar to create it, if necessary) and also you have to save a snap in its first slot. Subsequently, you will be able to change to that bank using the instrument's built-in BANK listbox. ((For the above reason the instrument structure also always tries to open snap 1 when you use the BANK listbox. This is because, if you try to select a non-existent snap# in another bank, then you can't change to that bank at all. The alternate behavior would be, when selecting another bank in the BANK listbox, to change to the same snap in the other bank; but then if you are on, say, snap 50 and there are only snaps up to program 10 in the other bank, then you would have to change to a snap below #10 in the current bank before you could change to the other bank. So, defaulting to snap 1 on a bank change means you can always get to another bank from any snap in the current bank, even if the other bank has less snaps. ))

Nice. But the Snaps section of B isn't working for me. I can't properly select a bank or patch. I always get the same preset, and the wrong bank. After fiddling with this for a while I can't switch presets at all, even when I switch back to A. Am I missing something? Apple Dual 1.8 GHz G5/1.5 GB RAM OSX.3.8

I'm really blown away by this synth. The user interface, the documentation, and finally snaps that reflect the tremendous power hidden behind countless ports and cables. I'd give it a vote of 20 if I could!

Wow, I'll be exploring this thing for months. I can't believe how little CPU it uses. Sounds great, looks great. I love the use of colour in the design - it adds to the comprehensibility and makes me go ohhhh pretty like a baby with an activity center. :D

Be SURE to check out the mhold option for the sequencers, and modulating them with other sequencers...yummm (and ymmv).
