Godel Clock

November 28, 2009

The clock unit sends SONGPOS to the arpeggiators.

ON

Enables the arpeggiator globally. When turned on, any notes which are turned on in the keyboard and MIDI immediately start playing. When turned off, any arpeggio notes still playing continue to their set duration before ending naturally.

SHUF, +

Adds a delay to even or odd clock triggers as a ratio of the clock period. When + is off, the delay is applied to even-numbered notes in the arpeggio sequence. When + is on, the delay is applied to odd-numbered notes.

BPM

Sets the internal clock speed in beats per minute. The BPM value is divided down by the Tempo settings.

INT/EXT

Sets the source for the clock. The instrument can use an external clock (also the clock in the Reaktor toolbar), or its internal clock.

If using an external clock, the instrument has less control over clock parameters, for example, the snapshot cannot include the set bpm value. However, Reaktor's clock module has a limited resolution, set by the application's event rate. An external clock therefore provides more accurate timing for clock rates which are not exact multiples of the event rate.

To improve the accuracy of the internal clock setting, increase REAKTOR's event rate. This increases CPU load, but the instrument is designed so that it is independent of the set clock rate, except for BPM resolution.

TEMPO, D, T

Selects the base tempo of the clock, as a ratio of the clock BPM. Some other controls can vary the tempo:

  • The beat generator can remove steps to scale tempo values. For example, if every other step in the beat generator is off, then the resulting tempo is half as fast.
  • The shuffle control adjusts timing between steps.

The D and T buttons can adjust the tempo as follows:

  • D (Dotted Tempo) ~

Adjusts the tempo as for dotted notes (1.5x normal value).

  • T (Triplet Tempo) Adjusts the tempo as for triplets (2/3 normal value).
  • D+T (4/3 Tempo)If both D and T are turned on, the resulting period would by 1.5*2/3 theoretically, which would be 1/1, canceling each other out and thus a useless variation. Therefore, when both D and T are ON, the instrument adjusts the rate in a custom manner to provide an additional multiplier ratio of 4/3.

SYNC

Affects behavior when the clock is on, and a note is played when all notes are off and no arpeggio is playing.

When ON (default), the clock and SONGPOS reset to zero when a note starts the arpeggio. When OFF, the previous timing is retained, which is useful when playing with other instruments or in sequencer environments.
