Panel Controls

The panel is arranged so that the most effective controls are easily accessible and clearly located in separate subpanels. The following topics describe each of the subpanels in turn.

Voices

This Electric subpanel sets and displays incoming pitch and MIDI data.

Tune

Sets the master tuning over a +/-1 octave range, in semitone intervals, applied after glide and bend.

Glide

Sets the rate of glide between successive notes in monophonic mode, or notes of the same number in poly mode. The range is like that of an ADSR envelope control.

Pb

Sets pitch bend from the panel.

Mw

Sets the mod wheel from the panel.

LFOs

The two LFO subpanels in Electric are labeled MG1 and MG2 in the instrument.

Wheel > Amp Mod

A small button in each of the two subpanel header areas enables control of the LFO amplitude by the mod wheel.

Rate

Sets the LFO frequency. The frequency scale depends on the SNC setting.

Width

Varies the aspect ratio of the LFO duty cycle in the range -100% to +100%

Tri/Pls/Sh/Br

Sets the LFO waveform type. Thew label over the knob displays the selected waveform type:

  • Tri: Triangle (if WIDTH is 0) or saw.
  • Pls: Pulse, or square wave if WIDTH is 0
  • Sh: Like Pulse, but the level at each transition also varies randomly.
  • Br: Like Sh, but the level changes are smoothed.

Snc

Controls how the LFO resets. When both SNC buttons are off, the LFO is free running.

When the top button is on, the LFO syncs with incoming SONGPOS markers, and the RATE knob sets the LFO frequency in tempo divisions.

When the bottom button is on, the LFO syncs with incoming note-on events. Each voice may then be in a different phase.

Controls

This Electric subpanel provides XY mouse control and sets the modulation matrix routing.

Source 1-5

Selects the modulation source for each of the five rows. The options are:

  • ---: off
  • MG1: LFO 1 source
  • MG2: LFO 2 source
  • X: The horizontal axis of the XY panel
  • Y: The vertical axis of the XY panel
  • E1: Amplitude envelope
  • E2: Envelope 2
  • Ve: Velocity of the most recent note
  • Kb: Pitch of the most recent note
  • Pb: Pitch bend
  • Mw: Mod wheel
  • At: Aftertouch

Amt 1-5

Sets the amount of modulation for each of the five rows as a percentage, in the range -100 to +100. Negative values invert the modulation.

Dest 1-5

Selects the modulation destination for each of the five rows. The options are:

  • ---: off
  • All: All destinations
  • O2: Oscillator 2 pitch
  • O3: Oscillator 3 pitch
  • Cut: Filter cutoff
  • Res: Filter resonance
  • Bw: Separation of two-pole low-pass and high-pass filters in Bw filter mode (has no effect in other modes)
  • Am1: Oscillator 1 amplitude (prior to FM and sync)
  • Am2: Oscillator 2 amplitude (prior to sync)
  • Am3: Oscillator 3 amplitude (prior to FM)
  • AmN: Noise amplitude

XY Panel

Sets the input for mouse XY modulation into the modulation matrix.

Waveforms

This Electric subpanel provides control of the oscillator and noise sound sources.

Sin/Tri/Saw/Sqr/Pls/Imp

Sets the waveform. The selected waveform displays in text over the knob. Options are:

  • Sin: Pure sine wave
  • Tri: Triangle wave
  • Saw: Sawtooth wave
  • Sqr: Square wave (50% duty cycle)
  • Pls: Pulse wave (75% duty cycle)
  • Imp: Impulse wave (90% duty cycle)

Fm

Switch to enable FM modulation of Osc1 by Osc3.

Snc

Switch to enable hard sync of Osc1 to Osc2.

Key

If on, note pitch directly controls note pitch, otherwise the pitch of all three oscillators is fixed.

Drift

Enables emulation of analog oscillators by adding a slightly different amount of slowly varying pitch change to each oscillator.

Operations

This Electric subpanel modifies the oscillators and noise generator.

Rng1 ~ Rng3

Sets the octave for each of the three oscillators.

Frq

When COLOUR is on, sets the noise colour.

Detune

Sets the amount of pitch offset from oscillator 1. The amount, set in cents, is applied directly to oscillator 2; and the inverted amount is applied to oscillator 3.

Tune 2-3

Sets the amount of pitch offset for each of oscillator 2 and 3 separately, set in semitones.

Colour

Enables the color filter for the noise source. Turn off to reduce CPU usage.

Mixer

This Electric subpanel controls the pre-filter mixer.

O1, O2, O3

Sets the amplitude of each oscillator independently.

O3 Filter Skip

The small button by the O2 label causes the output of oscillator 3 to bypass the filter, instead mixed with filter output from any other oscillators and noise after the distortion and saturation stages.

Noise

Sets the noise amplitude.

On1, On2, On3, On4

Switches to turn the three oscillators and noise off. Turning the sound sources off reduces CPU usage.

Filter

This Electric subpanel controls the filter.

Distortion

The small button in the top right corner of the filter subpanel header enables distortion when on. The distortion is level fixed.

Cut

Sets the base pitch for filter cutoff, before any modulation.

Res

Sets the base filter resonance, before any modulation.

Delay/Bw/--

This control only has effect in filter comb and band-filter modes. In Comb mode, the label changes to DELAY and the knob sets the comb filter delay time. In BRX and BPX modes, the label changes to Bw and sets the separation between the low- and high-pass filters which combined make a band-pass filter.

Key

Sets the amount that keyboard pitch tracking controls the filter cutoff point.

Sat

Sets the mix level of saturation added to the filter output.

LP2/LP4/Zawi/BPX/BRX/HP4

Sets the filter mode. Rotating the knob changes the label to indicate the current selection. Options are:

  • LP2: 2-pole low-pass filter
  • LP4: 4-pole low-pass filter
  • Zawi: Comb filter, with delays set by separate DELAY control.
  • BPX: Band-pass filter with series low-pass and band-pass stages. The separate BW control sets the pitch separation of the two filters
  • BRX: Band-pass filter with parallel low-pass and band-pass stages. The separate BW control sets the pitch separation of the two filters
  • HP4: 4-pole high-pass filter

Eg

Sets the amount that the amplitude affects the filter cutoff.

Envelope 1 and 2

This Electric subpanel controls the envelope generators. Envelope 1 is also hard-wired to control the output amplitude. The envelopes have the standard ADSR format.

A

Sets the envelope attack rate.

D

Sets the envelope decay rate.

S

Sets the envelope sustain level.

R

Sets the envelope release rate.

Master

This Electric subpanel is for the master volume and key mode.

VU Meter

Displays the post-effects output volume.

Lvl

Sets the output level in dB.

Leg

The top button enables legato mode for both envelopes.

The bottom button enables polyphonic mode when on. When off, all voices play monophonically, slightly detuned from each other to provide a fatter sound.

3-Band Eq

This Electric subpanel controls the 3-band EQ. It receives input from the VCA and is pre-effects.

EQ On

The little button in this EQ subpanel's header enables both pre and post EQ.
